What is Glucosamine?
The most frequently asked question we receive is, “What is Glucosamine?“
Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is produced naturally in our bodies. It can usually be found in the cartilage, but also the liver and Kidney. It is proven that the body’s production of Glucosamine may decline as we get older. Glucosamine is derived from glucose molecules and aids in repairing damaged cartilage, building new cartilage, producing synovial fluid, cushioning joints, relieving pain and reducing inflammation. Producing Glucosamine can often take our bodies some time and even still larger quantities may be need to heal our damaged cartilage and joints.
Why do I need it?
Glucosamine is able to stop the progression of arthritis and reverse some of the damage already caused. It is not a cure, but it can ease the symptoms and also reduce inflammation. When used on a regular basis, Glucosamine assists with these issues and enables good joint health.
Many double-blind trials have consistently shown that Glucosamine reduces the symptoms of Osteoarthritis.
In a recent study compiled in the Lancet Report, two hundred and twelve patients with osteoarthritis issues in the knee received either a placebo pill or 1,500 mg of Glucosamine once a day for three years. At the end of the trial, X-rays of the knees of patients who took the placebo showed a significant increase in joint abnormalities, while there was no deterioration in the X-ray of the knees of people given a Glucosamine supplement.
Also, the group given the placebo had a increases in their ‘symptoms rating’ by 10% but those given Glucosamine saw a decrease of approximately 24%.
The Lancet report has demonstrated quite importantly that taking Glucosamine as a means of helping to relieve the symptoms of Arthritis and preventing further deterioration would be a wise choice. Also perhaps more importantly, that there are no side effects associated with taking Glucosamine on a regular basis for a prolonged period of time.
